Will Modafinil Show Up On A Drug Test?

As an avid smart drug user, I did some research to find out myself.

When I began taking Modafinil, I had a job in corporate America. There was a drug test monkey on my back too.

But I knew Modafinil would help me during the job.

I wanted to smash through my quota every single month. Smart drugs could help me do just that, but I didn’t want to get fired for failing a random drug test.

I had to know the truth. I needed to know if Modafinil would show up on a drug test. So I got to the bottom of things and found the correct answer…

– It Depends –

It might not be what you want, but it’s the truth.

Some people can certainly take Modafinil with their jobs. Others cannot. That’s just the way it is.

So let’s take a look at what Modafinil actually is, if it’ll cause you to fail a drug test, and whether athletes can take it or not.

Modafinil in Corporate America

If you’re concerned about taking Modafinil and drug tests in the workplace, you needn’t be. For the most part, Modafinil is not the type of drug your employer will be testing for.

The vast majority of drug test administered by your employer will not test for Modafinil or Armodafinil. While the pharmaceutical drug can be detected in your blood or urine, this will not cause you to fail a drug test.

Because Modafinil is a pharmaceutical drug that many have a prescription for.

Companies do not have the time and money to investigate all the prescription drugs an employee is on 99.9 times out of 100.

…If the drug does not interfere with an employee’s ability to perform the job.

As well, Modafinil is not an amphetamine. The chemical structure is completely different, so you don’t have to worry about the smart drug showing up as something it’s not on a drug test.

If you want to be extra cautious, you can skip taking Modafinil for 72-96 hours before a drug test.

This will ensure the body has completely cleared the smart drug from your system.

However, this is overkill.

For most in corporate America, the drug won’t even come up on a routine level drug screening.

Lastly, Modafinil is a wakefulness agent prescribed to narcolepsy patients and those suffering from shift sleep disorder and sleep apnea.

Unlikely other prescription and illegal drugs that hinder concentration and focus, Modafinil does the opposite.

While it’s illegal to drive when taking certain narcotics and prescription drugs, there is no such laws regarding Modafinil.

What type of employer fires someone striving to enhance their mental state and make the company more money?!

Modafinil and Athletics

Now, Modafinil and athletics is a completely different story. Many international sporting organizations consider Modafinil to be a performance-enhancing drug.

If you’re competing in the NCAA, I recommend you do NOT take Modafinil.

While the drug isn’t explicitly listed as a banned substance, there’s no reason to risk it. The NCAA states that there is no complete list of banned substances (Source).

Just avoid smart drugs if you participate in NCAA or any collegiate athletics.

The World Anti-Doping Agency also banned Modafinil in 2004 (Source).

If you partake in track and field or other Olympic sporting events, you cannot consume Modafinil. In doing so, you could fail a drug test.

Failed a Modafinil drug test.

Failed a Modafinil drug test.

Many professional athletes have had their medals revoked after testing positive for Modafinil, including Kelli White (Source).

The United States Anti-Doping Agency states that Modafinil is prohibited for athletes unless they have a prescription due to narcolepsy (Source).

Overall, athletes should avoid smart drugs like Modafinil, as sporting agencies take “performance enhancers” quite seriously.

Seriously, do not use Modafinil is competing in professional athletics.

Not only do you have far too much at risk, but Modafinil isn’t all that great when talking about sports.

Sure, it’s a mental cognitive enhancer…

But it won’t make you run faster or jump higher.

Modafinil and Drug Testing | The Verdict

The reality is Modafinil can show up on a drug test, but it rarely will, especially with most employers who pay for basic drug testing packages designed to catch potheads and those with an amphetamine problem.

Using Modafinil to improve cognition in corporate America is advisable.

I’m no lawyer…but most employers view someone trying to better there mental performance as a damn good thing.

If you’re concerned about a drug test, just give yourself 3-4 days without smart drugs before the test – if possible.

For athletes, I’d recommend staying away from Modafinil.

Doping agencies view the smart drug as a performance enhancer. You could be banned for taking it.
