Modafinil and Hair Loss: What You Need to Know
If you’re a male genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness who uses smart drugs, then Modafinil and hair loss may have crossed your mind.
Many pump their bodies full of smart drugs each and every day without thinking about the side effects. I know I did for about a year. Then I decided to push things a bit…
I was in a small beach town in Peru. The only reason I went to the city was to get a ton of work done and surf 3-4 times each week. I planned on being bored. I knew the nightlife wouldn’t be great. I was thinking with the proper brain for once.
I used Modafinil 3-4 times every week. I’d down two pots of coffee any day I was taking the smart drug. 55-70 hour weeks were the norm for my five weeks in the city.
But I noticed something. After the month, my hair looked significantly thinner than it did when I arrived. At first, I assumed that the surfing and salt water had done the damage.
Then I thought about my smart drug usage. Could Modafinil and hair loss be connected? Was hair loss a side effect of Modafinil?
I quickly opened up Google and found dozens of forums talking about Modafinil and hair loss. Apparently, a number of users found the smart drug significantly sped up male pattern baldness.
P.S.: This is not medical advice. I am not a doctor or medical professional. Always consult a doctor before taking any prescription drugs. And make sure to read our terms and condition page.
What Does Science Say?
Now, anyone that understands hair loss knows things are a little more complex. Even if a couple hundred Modafinil users experience hair loss, that doesn’t mean the smart drug is causing the shedding.
Hair loss is a complex issue that often involves a number of factors, including genetics, hormonal profile, drug use, and more.
So is hair loss a documented side effect of Modafinil usage? Well, the science is a mixed bag. Most sites don’t list hair loss as a documented side effect of Modafinil.
Web MD put together an extensive list of Modafinil side effects, how often they occur, and their severity. Hair loss is noticeably absent from the list.
Drugs.com also ignores the possibility that Modafinil and hair loss is a match made in hell. You won’t find the side effect listed on their main piece on Modafinil, either.
Most of the science-backed research and documented side effects of the smart drug don’t talk about or consider hair loss.
A few “reputable” sites (here and here) mention Modafinil and hair loss as a potential side effect of using the pharmaceutical. But the vast majority of information regarding the subject comes from forums and first-hand accounts.
It’s Not Chemotherapy
The reality of the situation is a little more nuanced. Modafinil usage certainly effects alopecia or male pattern baldness.
But the smart drug isn’t chemotherapy. I promise you that much. Regulated Modafinil usage with proper dosing while taking tolerance into account won’t have a dramatic effect on your hairline.
Popping Modafinil a few times a week while managing every other aspect of your health isn’t going to do too much damage to your hair.
Modafinil isn’t like chemotherapy, where you’re guaranteed to lose all your hair in an instant. That’s just not how it works.
Many Modafinil users have taken the smart drug for years without any significant hair loss issues.
While Modafinil can speed up the hair loss process in males predisposed, there are a few other factors to consider…
Stress, Alopecia, and Modafinil Usage
People that consume Modafinil as a smart drug or nootropic do so for a reason. Often, they’re in a competitive industry that requires high levels of focus and enhanced productivity.
Most Modafinil users work in high-stress environments. They’re competitors. Competition causes stress in certain people.
And guess what causes hair loss? High-stress levels.
Stress can certainly lead to hair falling out at an increased pace. So can a lack of proper sleep, which is a documented side effect of this nootropic.
While Modafinil may have some effect on male pattern baldness, most users should consider other factors when dealing with hair loss and Modafinil usage.
How to Combat Hair Loss While Using Modafinil
Once I realized that Modafinil may speed up alopecia in men predisposed to it, I started to think about using the smart drug while minimizing the negative side effects.
If you still want to use Modafinil without losing hair, there’s good news: it’s definitely possible. I’ve been using Modafinil on and off for the last year with little change in my hairline.
The “key” words: on and off.
If you use Modafinil too much, you will lose more hair. Using Modafinil 4-7 days a week for 2-12 months is a surefire way to increase hair loss.
95% of Modafinil and hair loss stories online involve someone taking the smart drug every day for 5-12 months. Then they realize their hairline is shot because they’ve been pumping the smart drug too much.
You should never take Modafinil every day when using the pharmaceutical drug as a nootropic. That’ll screw up your tolerance and can lead to a variety of side effects.
If you’re a man concerned with hair loss while on Modafinil, stick to this script:
- Use Modafinil 1-2 times per week.
- Only use 200 mg each day.
- Use the smart drug for 4-5 weeks, then take a week off.
By following this protocol, you’ll minimize any negative effects of Modafinil on your hairline.
The Next Steps
I do more than limit Modafinil usage to protect my hairline. I love the smart drug, but I’m a big fan of my hair, too.
As such, I take certain supplements to combat hair loss. The basics should keep your covered here. I use these hair loss supplements to ensure Modafinil doesn’t have a great effect on my hairline.
I use these hair loss supplements to ensure Modafinil doesn’t have a great effect on my hairline. The supplements I use to fight alopecia include:
The stack above won’t put a full-stop on hair loss, especially when adding pharmaceutical drugs to the mix. That’s just not how supplements tend to work.
They will significantly slow down any issues with alopecia for many users.
When talking about Modafinil and hair loss, there’s one more factor to consider: sleep. When using this nootropic, you’ll definitely need to “hack” your sleep.
If you refuse to supplement before bed after a day on Modafinil, you may find many sleepless nights ahead of you.
I’d recommend taking these three supplements before going to bed on days you consume Modafinil:
These will ensure you get to sleep and stay asleep after a day using smart drugs. Highly recommended.
The cherry juice extract is especially important. The supplement improves sleep, decreases joint pain, and can even fight off gout. While this isn’t scientific, cherry juice extract may help with the minor liver issues Modafinil can offer.
