I’ll also cover things like Modafinil prescriptions, legalities in Australia, shipping times, and so much more. Here’s an overview of what you’ll find in the guide below:

I am not a doctor or a lawyer. This is not legal or medical advice. This guide/article is strictly for entertainment. Always consult a medical professional before consuming any nootropic, like Modafinil. Always abide by the laws of your country. Oh, and please read my disclaimer page, too.

What is Modafinil?

Before we dive too deep into how to buy Modafinil in Australia, let’s discuss what the smart drug is and why so many people love it.

As the world’s most popular smart drug, Modafinil has gained famed as the premier cognitive enhancer on the market. Most people, including many Australians, find Modafinil offers benefits like:

  • 12+ hours of intense focus
  • Increased overall productivity
  • Enhanced cognitive functions
  • Improved memory retention
  • Inability to sleep or feel fatigue, i.e. great for all-nighters
  • …And more!

Overall, Modafinil makes you feel like you can accomplish anything and everything you want – while you’re on it.

It’s not the “Limitless” pill, but it’s pretty darn close.

Originally, Modafinil was developed as a pharmaceutical drug under the name Provigil. Created in France during the late 1980s, the drug quickly rose to popularity as doctors began prescribing it for common ailments like [1]:

  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Shift Sleep Disorder

In the late 1990s, Provigil made its way to the United States. And before you knew it, Provigil was being used for off-the-label uses. Grad students and CEOs in major cities like NYC and Boston quickly figured out that Modafinil gave them a competitive advantage over the competition.

These hustlers could pop 200 mg of Modafinil and focus for 12+ or pull an all-nighter without any issue. The smart drug craze had officially begun, and Modafinil was at the forefront of it!

Things haven’t slowed down since then. It didn’t take long for Modafinil to surpass Adderall as the world’s most popular study drug, either. Now people are looking to get their hands on the smart drug from all around the world. There’s a reason you’re curious about how to buy Modafinil in Australia.

Because Modafinil just works, mate.

Modafinil Side Effects and Safety

While consuming a pharmaceutical drug for off-the-label uses can be frowned up, almost everyone finds Modafinil to be quite  safe. Still, it’s important to educate oneself on any and all risks before using Modafinil as a smart drug or nootropic.

As such, below you’ll find some of the most common side effects of Modafinil, including [2]:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Nervousness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Dry mouth
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Insomnia

These are the most common side effects of Modafinil, especially for first-time users.

Further studies have been done to understand safety concerns regarding Modafinil. Most have concluded that the smart drug is generally safe, but further research may be warranted as to why.

For example, a study completed by the Korean Society of Environmental Health and Toxicology concluded that [3]:

Modafinil is known to have less or no adverse effects than those found in traditional psychostimulants such as amphetamine, methylphenidate or cocaine. It can be applied as an anti-psychotic or anti-fatigue agent. However, the waking mechanism of modafinil is yet to be fully revealed. Recent studies reported that modafinil may be subject to abuse and addiction. In addition prolonged sleeplessness induces stress responses and impairs immune function.

Modafinil can be used by anyone, who wishes to work late, stay awake, enhance their cognitive reactions, or brighten their moods. Users may already be under a great level of stress, i.e. cancer patients or soldiers in a battle field. A psychoneuroimmunological approach is thus needed to investigate the multi-functional effects of modafinil.

Overall, Modafinil is one of the safer study and/or smart drugs available. With no reported deaths from overdose, you can generally assume Modafinil shouldn’t cause much harm.

Modafinil side effects are something to consider. However, most users find minor headaches, nausea, and insomnia to be the only issues.

When talking safety and Modafinil, healthy users have little to worry about — although it must be noted that I’m no doctor ;(

Is Modafinil Legal in Australia?

Now, I’m no lawyer. Nor am I a legal scholar. So, this section about the legalities of Modafinil in Australia should not be construed as anything but hyperbole. This is NOT advice.

Is Modafinil legal in Australia?

Yes and no. Honestly, it’s a grey area. Here’s the simplest way to break things down:

If you have narcolepsy or severe sleep apnea, your Australian doctor can legally prescribe you brand name Modafinil [4] – generally Modavigil, as Provigil in Australia isn’t that common.

With this prescription, you can then go to a pharmacy in Australia and legally purchase Modafinil over-the-counter in the country with that prescription. For those of us unable to get a prescription for Provigil in Australia, buying from a pharmacy is technically illegal.

It’s also impossible.

Why? Because no Australian pharmacist is risking their career to sell you pharmaceutical-grade smart drugs under-the-counter.

Tl • DR:

If you want to buy Modafinil in Australia, you’ll need to get a prescription from a local doctor for a commonly prescribed ailment. Then go to the pharmacy. This is the laws regarding Modafinil in the country.

However, there’s a little bit more than meets the eye here. The laws and legalities surrounding Modafinil in Australia and how to get your hands on it require a little due diligence. Which is why I need to discuss…

Drug Schedules in Australia

Australia drug scheduling laws come into play when talking Provigil in Australia.

In the country, pharmaceutical and street drugs are classified through the Therapeutic Goods Act, or TGA. The drugs are classified in groups 1-10 based on how dangerous they and the potential for abuse. According to the TGA, the world’s most popular smart drug is considered a schedule 4 medication. As such, there are some limitations when buying Modafinil in the country.

Here’s a brief breakdown of drug schedules in Australia:

  • Schedule 1 Purposely left blank by the government
  • Schedule 2 – Generally safe pharmaceutical drugs, including: Paracetamol, Dextromethorphan, Non-sedating antihistamines, and similar substances
  • Schedule 3 – Safe pharmaceutical drugs, but ones the Australian government prefers to track and manage, including: Codeine, Pseudoephedrine, Salbutamol, and the like
  • Schedule 4 – Prescription medications that have potential for addiction, including Modafinil, Benzodiazepines, SSRIs, and more
  • Schedule 5 – Potentially dangerous compounds for humans, including methanol and some heavy metals
  • Schedule 6 – These are poisons according to the TGA, and include: Ammonia, Barium salts, and more
  • Schedule 7 – Dangerous drugs and poisons that generally aren’t sold to the public without special considerations, like Thallium, Colecalciferol, and similar substances
  • Schedule 8 – Controlled drugs that require a special license to distribute and are heavily monitored by the Australian government, including: Morphine, Oxycodone, and Amphetamine
  • Schedule 9 – Prohibited drugs or street drugs that are not legally sold in the country, including cocaine, DMT, and marijuana

It should be clear by now, but if it’s not…

Drug scheduling in Australia is a complex matter. For example, let’s look at Modafinil. Modafinil is a schedule 4 drug [5] in Australia, as the government seems to think that Modafinil offers some potential for abuse and addiction.

While seemingly true in theory due to the active mechanisms in Modafinil, the AU government may be reaching when considering Modafinil as an addictive substance.

There have been very few Provigil addiction cases ever reported or recorded. For example, here’s one study talking about a rare case of Modafinil dependence [6].

The smart drug simply isn’t addictive in a manner most individuals use the word. You can take Modafinil multiple times a week without ever feeling a Modafinil “craving” or “withdraw” before or after.

Still, Modafinil is a schedule 4 drug in Australia…and that won’t be changing for sometime.

How to Get a Modafinil Prescription in Australia

Australia is a decidedly developed nation [7]. This shouldn’t come as any surprise.

As such, the sale and consumption of pharmaceutical drugs generally requires a prescription from a registered doctor in the country.

This is certainly the case in Australia.

To purchase Provigil in Australia from a pharmacy, you will need a prescription from a doctor. As previously discussed, there is absolutely no workaround here. Australian pharmacists cannot be negotiated with.

So, how do you get a Modafinil prescription in Australia? One that allows you to purchase Provigil or Modavigil from a pharmacy…

You head over to a doctor and beg for mercy.

Just kidding.

Generally, Australian doctors only prescribe Modafinil for patients who have narcolepsy – which is not exactly a medical issue one can “fake” or lie about. Narcolepsy is a condition where one falls asleep at all times of the day – often without warning. It can be potentially dangerous, especially when operating a motor vehicle.

If you have narcolepsy, just go to the doctor and get a Modafinil prescription. No need to read this guide. For the rest of us, we’re left with two options when getting a Modafinil prescription in Australia is of concern.

The first one involves going to a sleep specialist and complaining of excessive daytime sleepiness and drowsiness. You can blame the fatigue on sleep apnea or shift sleep disorder. The doctor should order a day-time sleep study.

Based upon these results, the doctor could then prescribe Modafinil due to excessive daytime sleepiness. That’s the last 100% legal way of getting a Modafinil prescription in Australia.

Luckily…There are other ways to get your hands on Modafinil while living down under. Ways that certainly are NOT illegal. The easiest? You can buy Modafinil online and have it shipped to Australia.

– Is this 100% legal? –

Again, I’m no lawyer.

But I’ve yet to hear about anyone having legitimate legal issues importing a Schedule 4 pharmaceutical drug for personal use – which I’ll be discussing furthermore below.

I’d surmise the worst that happens is your package gets seized by customs and you get a full refund from the online Modafinil pharmacy you purchased from.

Even this is rare!

See, if you buy Modafinil from the best online vendors, they will guarantee their shipments to Australia. This means you either get your Modafinil or you get a full refund or reshipment. Your choice.

Basically, you have no risk.

If customs confiscates your package, you get your money back or the vendor sends you another order ASAP.

Generic Modafinil and Armodafinil in Australia

If you get a prescription from the doctor in Australia, you’ll be able to buy Modafinil from a pharmacy in the country. Once you have a prescription, you can go to the pharmacy and get Modafinil under names like:

  • Modavigil
  • Provigil
  • Alertec

These are brand name Modafinil products sold in pharmacies in Australia. For Australians looking to order Modafinil online, common generic Modafinil products include:

These generic forms of Modafinil all do a damn good job. In fact, generic Modafinil and Armodafinil compare well with brand name products.

There’s not much of a difference between Provigil and Modalert. Plus, after testing all four of these generic products, I have a few recommendations for Australians and those living in the country.

Modalert is the stronger generic Modafinil brand in Australia. I highly recommend it. Modvigil is a cheap alternative for Australians looking for Modafinil.

When looking for Modafinil’s little cousin Armodafinil, I prefer Waklert. However, Artvigil is a little bit cheaper.

Overall, I stick with Modalert and Waklert for good reason. I’ve found them to be superior products and recommend them for anyone looking to buy Modafinil online in Australia.

Waklert Nootropic

Other Nootropics

If you’re curious about other nootropics in Australia and potential Modafinil alternatives, I’ve got a couple more ideas for you. Just know that Modafinil is the ‘King’ and Armodafinil in Australia is the ‘Queen’ when talking nootropics. Hell, Adrafinil is the ‘Prince’ to take that little analogy one step further.

There’s still some other nootropics in Australia that can be worthwhile alternatives. Here’s a few of my favorites:

  • Mind Lab Pro

I tried this smart drug for the first time recently. Let’s just say I was more than IMPRESSED.

You’ll find Modafinil-like or should I say “-lite” cognitive enhancement with Mind Lab Pro. It’s one of, it not my top, over-the-counter nootropic right now.

And it’s ideal to “cycle” with Modafinil. You’ll find 6-8+ of solid cognitive enhancement and intense focus, along with one benefit you might not get with Modafinil. What’s that? A nice creative boost. This is the best nootropic for creatives I’ve found!

Highly recommended.

Hello there I live in Australia and I am importing Modafinil from India. If my package gets seized by local police can get my package back if I have a Australian doctors prescription script?

    Jake - October 17, 2018

I’m no lawyer. So I can’t give you a definitive answer.

What I will say is the vast majority of packages get by customs with zero issue whatsoever here.

And reputable vendors will resend a package or refund money if it gets taken by Australian customs.

DogP - October 28, 2018

There seems to be 4 different types. Confused.

    Jake - October 29, 2018

Are you talking products available or vendors?

For products available, I generally recommend Modalert for 12+ hours of focus. This is generic Modafinil.

For 8-10+ hours of focus, I love Waklert. This is generic armodafinil.

Again, this is not medical advice.

Cheryl - December 1, 2018

Has anyone had trouble with ordering? Two vendors have now said to contact my bank for authorisation. I have contacted my bank and there is no problem from my end. I have tried two vendors multiple times
I’m in Australia.

    Jake - December 2, 2018

It could be due to the credit card you’re using. The CC processor may not accept either Visa, Mastercard, American Express.

If you can’t get through, I’d just buy some BTC and make an order that way.

You can also buy via credit card and Amazon gift card here:

Alexi - April 29, 2019

Hi Jake do you know anything about the drug test for work and police random drug tests? Will this show up as anything? Do they test for it?

    Jake - April 29, 2019

Hey Alexi, I’m honestly not sure in Australia. I wrote this piece about that exact question in for a United States audience:

However, I’m not as confident in the drug testing information in Australia. My gut is you won’t have any issue with it.

      Alexi - April 29, 2019

      Dunk - May 5, 2019

      Hi Jake

I get tested oral tested for my occupation, I have been tested 4 hours after taking 200 mg of Modafinil and the result was negative. Since the I have been tested over half a dozen times with Modafinil in my system. I was concerned as, oral swabs are prone for false positives since, they are sensitive. There has been numerous false positives where I work for seemingly of the most innocuous causes.

        Jake - May 6, 2019

So…you’re saying Modafinil doesn’t cause an issue for you when getting drug tested in Australia because it’s technically not a stimulant?

Spencer - July 4, 2019

Hi Jake,

I wanted to provide some feedback on my experience in obtaining Modafinil locally in Australia.

Firstly, I have been a daily user & avid endorser of these little miracles for almost 3 years now (running tandem with Bacopa as my staple). I can safely it has absolutely changed my life, though my journey is just that, and each should approach theirs without detailed preconceptions.

A prescription for Modafinil isn’t impossible to obtain from a doctor if you can convince them of your intentions. What IS impossible outside of a narcolepsy etc diagnosis, is PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) subsidizing. Effectively, an educated discussion with a GP can potentially get what I consider a ‘medically supervised trial’ of the drug. A prescription without PBS will see you charged around $120AUD for 60x 100mg tablets. Daylight robbery yes, but a small price to pay while feeling out the space knowing a doctor is overseeing it. I fulfilled my first script, used as prescribed, increased the dose until I found my groove, then when I was confident in my body’s response to it, began to buy online. I got a second script written out that I have never used, but I carry it with me when i travel etc to prove I can have it legitimately. By the time the 2nd script should’ve run out I explained to my Doctor somewhat off the record that I couldn’t afford to buy them locally so was bringing them in myself. He advised I be careful, but accepted my decision as they were clearly benefiting me, and still discusses my progress with me from time to time to ensure all is well.

When I spoke to my doctor originally, I was starting to nod off on my drive home everyday simply from the mind-numbing nature of being stuck in traffic after a long day. It was becoming a hazard to myself and others particularly with one near miss with another vehicle that shook me up.

I approached showing I had tried everything else (coffee, red bull, more sleep etc), that I had done my research on the drug, why I thought it would work better over everything else, and that I was genuinely concerned for my mine & others safety. It took me 5 minutes too get it over the line, and I’ve never looked back.

Whilst everyone’s experience will be different, thought this worth a mention. Thanks, and wishing everyone the best.

    Jake - July 4, 2019

This is exceptionally interesting information. Thank you for sharing Spencer. When I update this article, I’ll make sure to include what you’ve stated here.

Sounds like you’ve got a great doctor down there, as well.

Ben - August 5, 2019

Hey Jake,

I am very keen to purchase the Modafinil locally in Australia from one of the websites you have referenced above. However, If i wanted to buy in bulk, how much would be too much? Is 300 tablets too much?

    Jake - August 6, 2019

Hey Ben, many people make orders of 300 tablets. It is not “too” much, but that’s basically a full year supply of Modafinil.

If you plan to take it daily, then that could be beneficial — especially to save money.
